I am a Public School Teacher

I wrote this several years ago. If memory serves me right, I read something on Facebook that aggravated me so this was my private response. I thought this would be a good time to make it public for a few reasons. One, we will be gearing back up for school soon and hopefully it will motivate some. Two, my next few posts will be dedicated to teaching so I thought this would help set the stage. And three, I just like it. I think it explains me, and other teachers, well. I know we all fuss sometimes, but we CAN handle it.

I am a public school teacher,
NOT because…

I don’t know what else to do.
I am not good at anything else.
I cannot afford to teach at a private school.
I want to be principal one day.
I get to spend summers with my children.
I needed retirement or insurance.

I am a public school teacher,
Because…

I am called by God to teach.
I am good at it.
I want to share the joy of learning.
I want to share the joy of reading.
I am a light to many of my students.
I want my students to know what unconditional love looks like.
I want my students to know what high expectations feel like.

And because of that, it will take a whole lot more than standardized test, TKES, LKES, IEPs, long hours, low morale, large class size, and no discipline to run me off.

I am a public school teacher, because I can handle it.
