4 Ways to Stay Off Balance for God

I woke up an hour before my alarm to a stress induced nightmare, one of those dreams that really looks too close to reality to brush off, so instead I lay in bed and worry. I stress over little things and honestly some big things. On a Monday morning before I have even gotten out of bed, I already feel like I am drowning.

This is not how God designed us. This is not what he wanted our lives to look like. No, he never said he would protect us from all struggles and trials, but this is not God induced growth. This was the devil. This was my flesh, and I was letting it have too much control.

It’s tough to find the right mix. Where do I put all my energy? Where do I put all my thoughts? My career? My Family? Children? Husband? My church? I know we have all felt like the clown spinning all the plates at one time or another, or if you are like me, you feel like that poor clown most of the time.

Sometimes the plates are steady and spinning smoothly but other times they are wobbly and tipsy and I am doing my best not to let them all topple to the ground.

So how do we find that balance? How can we stay balanced in our lives so that we are supporting all the areas that need it and we are also being supported? How do we look less like the clown spinning plates and more like a woman living in the confidence of God?

Well, in order to find balance, we need to be off balance. God needs to take the biggest piece of our pie. Not the children. Not our husband. And definitely not our career. In order to find balance in our busy schedules, God needs to get the most.

And here are four ways to stay off balanced for God:

1) Make Him a priority.

I know that is kinda what I am preaching here in a nutshell. But I don’t mean just say God is a priority, I mean put some actions behind those words. Whether it is 15 seconds or 15 minutes, before you leave your house every morning, you need to give God some time. Say a prayer. Study the Bible. Read a verse. Read a devotion. Whatever it is. But take some time to set your heart and mind in the right place before you ever begin the day.

I suggest ending your day with him as well. I keep several books and devotions by my bed. I read over one quickly before I turn in for the night. Beginning and ending the day with my mind on Jesus, learning from Him, opening the door for the Holy Spirit to speak, allows for the time in between to be a little more balanced, a little more focused.

2) Give Him your empty space.

Now, I know you probably don’t have much empty space in your day to sit and do nothing. I am not talking about that. I am talking about the empty space in your mind. We all have those moments where our mind has time to wonder, and I don’t know about you, but my mind doesn’t usually wonder to nice places all by itself. It likes to wonder to worries and fears and stresses.

So, I have learned to train my brain and give Jesus those empty spaces, times when I am just waiting, driving, or getting ready – you know those tasks I have done so many times that I don’t even have to think about it. I need to give those moments to God.

In the car or while getting ready, listen to praise music. Let the praise of Jesus fill your empty spaces. Listen to a podcast and begin to meditate on the Godly wisdom of others in your empty spaces. Say a prayer. If you begin to pray every time you have a thoughtless moment, instead of worry, I bet your entire life would be transformed and you would definitely find balance.

And for the really rough moments when I can’t listen to anything and don’t have the words for prayer, I recite scripture. I have a scripture that I made my motto for 2018 and I just repeat it over and over in my head. It helps me find hope, focus, and definitely balance.

3) Let God choose your priorities.

This is a hard one. This one might make people mad and it might disappoint others. But, we need to let God choose our priorities. I know we think certain things are socially expected so they need to be a priority or worse, we feel the need to be involved in EVERYTHING at church and because it is at church, so it all must be a priority. That just isn’t the case.

We are all one body but different parts. God doesn’t want us doing it all, and He certainly isn’t concerned with worldly expectations. So prayerfully consider all your responsibilities and ask God to direct you. You don’t have to do it all.

Rest is important too. Balance is needed. Even Jesus had to have quiet moments alone, times to rejuvenate. So, allow God to choose your priorities so that you too have the balance that Christ found.

4) Take a breath.

Literally. I am not sure why God designed our bodies the way He did, but He designed us so that we require air. I think we forget that sometimes. Sometimes we just need to breath. Stop. Take a breath. And then another, and think about your creator.

Think about the intricacies of your body and then of nature, and let it be a reminder that God has got this. Whatever has you in a tailspin, whatever has you thrown off balance, God’s got it – He created it. So just take that breath and focus on Him.

Again, when we start focusing on Him more, if we start throwing our scales off balance for Jesus, then miraculously the rest of our life comes into balance. It’s funny the way Jesus works like that – the last will be first and all that.

But if you feel like the clown spinning one too many plates, then stop. Put the plates down before there is a major fall and go pick up the Bible. Let God lead you to making Him a priority and He will lead you to a balanced life from there. But first, He has to be first and He has to be the most.
