Since last week I spoke about the power of a testimony, let me start with a testimony on how God worked with me. It was Monday and I had just posted the week’s post. I went into my prayer time and one of the focuses of my prayer was next week’s blog. I had a few ideas bouncing around in my head but nothing really stood out.
For several weeks, I have felt burdened for teachers. I really wanted to write a blog post with them in mind, but I wasn’t sure what I could say that would make a difference. I wasn’t sure what I could say that hasn’t already been said. I mean, there is a lot of encouragement out there for teachers, and sometimes that just isn’t enough. I prayed, “I really just want to write the words you would have me to say. I want to be empty and you fill me with your words.” I said amen without a clear answer, but I pulled up previous blog posts I had written for teachers, hoping the words would inspire me and through those words – I am not sure how – God spoke to me and basically said, “Encourage them with my words. I have a book full of encouragement. Give them that.”
So that is what I have here. I have compiled a list of encouraging Old Testament Scriptures for teachers. I simply flipped through my Bible and stopped on all the highlighted scripture. I listed through the whole Bible, but as I started compiling the list I realized just how long it was (which is a good thing) so I decided to limit it to just the Old Testament. Maybe I will include the New Testament Scriptures next time, or maybe that can be a discovery you make when you need encouragement.
Because, I know how rough the days can be. I live them too. I know how overwhelming the pressure can be. I feel it too. I know how demanding the responsibilities can be. I struggle through them too. I know how tired you are, how worn and jaded you feel, and I know that you get mad all over again because you feel those things, even when you don’t want to. But understand one thing, God knows too. He is there. He sees your service and your sacrifice and He knows when you are working in His name. So as you fight discouragement, as you fight this overwhelming ocean of expectation, remember the words God has given us:
“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”
“You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed;”
“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—”
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
1 Samuel 12:16
Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.
1 Samuel 12:20
And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.
1 Samuel 17:47
“…For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
2 Chronicles 20:12
“…For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
2 Chronicles 20:15
Thus says the Lord to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s.’
2 Chronicles 20:17
“You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.”
“O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?”
Psalm 3:3, 5-7
But you, O Lord, are the shield about me.
My glory, and the lifter of my head.
I lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
I will not be afraid of many thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me all around.
Arise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
I love You, O LORD, my strength.”
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD
In the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the LORD.
The LORD is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him.
For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for a lifetime;
Weeping may last for the night,
But a shout of joy comes in the morning.
the righteous cry, and the LORD hears
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 37: 3-7
Trust in the LORD and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the LORD;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Psalm 46:1, 10
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
Hear my cry, O God;
Give heed to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a refuge for me,
A tower of strength against the enemy.
Let me dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.
For You have heard my vows, O God;
You have given me the inheritance of those who fear Your name.
You will prolong the king’s life;
His years will be as many generations.
He will abide before God forever;
Appoint lovingkindness and truth that they may preserve him.
So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may pay my vows day by day.
For You have been my help,
And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
“With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation.”
If the LORD had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
If I should say, “My foot has slipped,”
Your lovingkindness, O LORD, will hold me up.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
He caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.
Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Isaiah 55:8-9, 11
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;
It will not return to Me empty,
Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
“I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
The LORD’S loving kindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
I called on Your name, O LORD,
Out of the lowest pit.
You have heard my voice,
“Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”
You drew near when I called on You;
You said, “Do not fear!”
O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause;
You have redeemed my life.
The LORD is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
I hope reading through this list of Old Testament Scriptures has given you encouragement and new hope. I pray you find several of these scriptures that you can hold on to. Print this list out. Read over it when you need encouragement (even if that is several times a day) and know that God is there, by your side, through your entire journey.
